Putting Librarians in THEIR Place: a fresh look at outreach

2008-11-21 [5.5 hours]; Penn State Great Valley, Malvern PA

á      Academic librarians are finding new & different ways of interacting with students & faculty, many of which take us beyond the walls of the library. In the morning session, we will hear Martin Kesselman of Rutgers University speaking on ÒEmbedded Librarianship: New Roles Based on Traditional Values.Ó His talk will address the various ways librarians are weaving their services into courses, academic departments, & even international research partnerships. Wayne Bivens-Tatum will then give a talk entitled ÒSeize the Day: Entrepreneurial Librarianship.Ó Are you wondering what an entrepreneurial librarian is? Someone who seizes opportunities, is tenacious, & has a desire to continually evaluate & improve services to a user community. He will discuss the strategies & techniques he developed on the way to becoming an integral member of & information service provider for an academic department at Princeton University. For the afternoon session, we are planning a panel of three pairs from area academic institutions. The panelists will share their experiences, as the librarian or faculty member, when librarians collaborate with specific departments or faculty for library instruction & reference service.
