Any Wordpress Gurus?

So I'm planning to convert this blog to Wordpress. It's installed on my ISP's server, and the test blog is up and running. However, the Wordpress import function doesn't work on Blogger FTP blogs, only on Blogspot.com blogs. The only advice I can find online is to first convert this blog to a Blogger-hosted blog on Blogspot.com, then to import it into Wordpress.

My thought is, if I do this, I lose the current URL and it will be very difficult to point people to the new blog. Anyone have suggestions on how I can import to Wordpress with minimal disruption?

I'm certainly no guru, and I have never done this before, so take this with a big grain of salt.

That said, how would the ftp blog -> blogspot blog --> wordpress blog "lose the current URL?" Wouldn't exporting the blog directly (were that possible) do that anyway?

I don't know how easy this is, but the path I would probably try to follow would involve backing up the current blog; exporting the current entries to a test wordpress installation; make sure everything works in the test location; backing up the current blog again; moving the test wordpress installation into this directory to maintain the URL of the home page.

I would assume that any procedure will nuke your old permalinks, but I'm not sure about that either.

I guess I wasn't clear -- my intention is to move to the Wordpress blog at the new URL, but to leave the current blog active for a while with a pointer on the top post to the new blog. That way people can get the new URL in their RSS feed or if they visit the FTP blog, and can be notified to switch their bookmarks accordingly.

But, if I switch the blog to Blogspot.com in order to make the conversion, then it looks like the FTP blog disappears and I can't leave it up/use it to point people to the new blog. If that makes more sense!

Hey Rachel,

When you switch back to the blogspot blog, the content in this URL does not get erased. That means you can still leave this blog active!

I did this. I went from blogspot to wordpress.com and then to wordpress.org. That is, you can switch and switch back, if I understand you correctly. I did it on jessamyn.com/journal. Find me on chat and I can exaplin it, you can keep the URL and all will be well.
