Adoption With Class
We spent a lovely St. Patrick's day yesterday at an all-day international adoption seminar, which is a requirement both of our agency and for foster care licensing for this purpose in Illinois. If you should ever have occasion to attend one of these things, be prepared for people to bandy about scary terms like "attachment disorder" and "failure to thrive." We were heartened again, however, by the parent panel at the end of the day, complete with cute babies and toddlers galore -- all of whom looked fairly attached and thriving to us!

If you are ever in NJ, I invite you to attend a gathering of my Russian adoption support group -- it is an extremely informal group with no name. We are really just friends who met during the process and now get together frequently with our kids -- and sometimes even for Mom's Night Out. Most of the children have been home 2-3+ years and they are doing wonderfully. Yes, some struggled with attachment and have had other issues to overcome but we can see the big picture now and it fills my heart with love to see our babies thriving and growing with no ill-effects from spending the first year or so of their life in an orphanage.
I am so glad that your agency and state is providing these classes. Some do not and that is when adoptions disrupt. I am sure you will be well prepared when the time comes to bring your new family member home.

Janie - Thanks! Yes, I understand why the agency provides the class, it's just an overwhelming day. I can look at my brother, 25 years later, as proof that this does work :). And, that is so wonderful that you have created this supportive network for each other.
