Description of Work
The Cataloger/Metadata Specialist performs original and copy cataloging and creates MARC records in OCLC and Voyager ILS for State Library's Government and Heritage Library (GHL) and state agency libraries. Catalogs materials in varying formats (print, video, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
microfilm, electronic) using current cataloging rules and standards (AACR2, LCRI, MARC, local guidelines), LC and Dewey classification systems; and LCSH. Manages and coordinates cataloging services for state agency libraries; consults with agency librarians about
cataloging needs and issues; creates Dublin Core metadata records for GHL digital collections in CONTENTdm; and assists in developing local
metadata standards. Performs name and subject authority work; coordinates GHL's efforts to formalize North Carolina name/subject authorities with other NC libraries through NACO membership. Initiates
& manages special cataloging, metadata, and database maintenance projects. This position is at the contributing level.
Knowledge of professional library & information science principles, methods, & practices; current LC & OCLC policies, practices & standards; one or more major metadata standards; and trends, issues, & Training and Experience Requirements
best practices in cataloging & metadata. Excellent interpersonal, verbal, & written communication skills; ability to provide training to other staff. Ability to effectively use technology, including
CONNEXION Client and an integrated library system. Demonstrated ability to perform original & copy cataloging in various formats; appropriately apply cataloging rules & procedures; and perform
authority verification. Ability to plan, organize, & establish
priorities and projects, and establish & maintain effective working relationships with state agency libraries, and work independently and in a collaborative team environment. Aptitude for complex analytical
work with attention to detail. Demonstrated problem solving skills & flexibility. Experience with NACO a plus.
Master's degree in library and information science or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. Degree must be received from appropriately accredited (ALA) institutions or regionally accredited programs in North Carolina.
