The University of Kansas Libraries are dynamic partners and campus leaders in advancing inquiry and learning for KU, for the state of Kansas, and for an ever-expanding community of world scholars.  The University of Kansas Libraries' website provides foundational support for teaching, learning, and research at KU.  The website is the KU Libraries' primary presence for a growing number of users who interact with us only through our virtual presence and services.

KU Libraries provide a rich and complex web environment that includes:  a public website combining static and database content, the library catalog (Voyager web catalog), hosted LibGuides and local instructional content, electronic resource discovery, KU ScholarWorks (the university's institutional repository),  Journals@KU (a collection of open-access journals), and numerous digital collections and finding aides created from work with the research community and from our own unique collections. 

The University of Kansas Libraries seek a creative and technically innovative information specialist and manager to serve as the Libraries' Web Services Manager.  The Manager ensures that the website brings together and expertly delivers scholarly resources and instructional services through a cohesive suite of user-focused web-based services.  S/he is the primary information architect responsible for the overall design, technology strategy, and effective delivery of content and digital services through the libraries' website and will work closely with library staff and university stakeholders (students, faculty, and staff) to understand and anticipate their needs. 

The Manager reports to the Assistant Dean for Collections and Scholar Services and facilitates work throughout all KU Libraries' departments and units.  Specifically, s/he will:

(60% ) Project Management /Supervision

·         plan and manage all major web-based initiatives and projects,  working closely with stakeholders in KU Libraries and with various collaborative partners;

·         supervise permanent staff and student FTE assigned to work on web services;

·         gather and develop requirements for those website projects that will be carried out by campus IT, library staff,  or outsourced to third parties;

·         approve and monitor the work of library, 3rd party vendors, and IT staff who provide programming, web development, or systems support for the libraries web presence across multiple platforms;

(30%) Design and Development

·         design, develop and implement web services,  content, and integration strategies across various application services, hosted and local, that support university research and instruction at all levels through the libraries' web presence;

·         develop and recommend policies, standards, and guidelines for web content development for a  library-wide team of editors, content developers and communications/publications staff;

·         develop training and  monitor quality of content contributed by a group of web editors formally assigned to work on web development by departments in 7 library branches;

·         lead user assessments and usability testing initiatives to ensure that our web-based content and services meet user expectations and improve support for teaching, learning, and research at KU;

 (10%) Libraries Campus Liaison

·         work closely with university stakeholders and representatives from library units to ensure comprehensive delivery of resources and services through the web;

·         serve as the libraries' primary liaison for web-based services to campus IT which provides expert  systems design, integration, and administrative services for KU Libraries.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.       At least 3 years experience developing and maintaining dynamic, data-driven websites that incorporate an underlying enterprise database such as MySQL, Oracle, or SQLserver with development tools like PHP, ColdFusion, Ruby-on-Rails, or Java.

2.        At least 2 years experience working with standard web technologies that include PHP, XML, XHTML, CSS, SQL, XSLT, and Javascript to build and/or integrate diverse web applications.

3.       2 or more years experience with usability testing of web-based content and services based on web accessibility standards and user-centered design principles.

4.       At least 1 year of experience designing relational databases.

5.       Strong project management skills and ability to work independently or to lead collaborative teams within the Libraries and university web communities as evidenced by specific successful projects managed by the applicant.

6.       Demonstrated excellence in communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

 

PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:

1.       Experience in a LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) environment specifically working to design or develop web-based academic library services.

2.       Formal coursework in, or experience with, user information-seeking behaviors in an academic environment as evidenced by prior job experience or college transcripts.

3.       Demonstrated commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population.

4.       Strong organizational, analytical, and problem solving skills.

5.       Experience with implementing a web content management system.

6.       Experience with ColdFusion.

7.       Familiarity with digital collection development and digital media technologies including audio and video delivery through the web.

8.       Experience with bibliographic data and integrated library systems as related to the development of the library web catalog.

9.       Experience creating and delivering library or instructional services through social media.

10.   Familiarity with the implications of the Americans with Disabilities Act on the presentation of web content and electronic resources.

11.   Evidence of maturing professional development through participation and service in library, instructional, or information science organizations.
