The University of Louisville (UofL) Libraries invites applications from creative and energetic candidates for the position of Physical Sciences and Engineering Reference Librarian. The position reports to the head of the Reference Department and would be a part of a collegial, service-oriented, and progressive department of 7 librarians, 3 professional staff, and 7 student assistants.

Position Description and Requirements

The Physical Sciences and Engineering Reference Librarian serves as the reference and collection specialist in the following areas: chemistry, physics, mathematics, biochemistry, and a variety of engineering areas including industrial, civil, electrical, mechanical, environmental, chemical, and computer.

The Physical Sciences and Engineering Reference Librarian is responsible for information literacy instruction in assigned subject areas; evaluating, selecting, and reviewing materials and information resources for inclusion in the collection; creating and maintaining strong communication lines with the assigned disciplines by providing creative programming and outreach to faculty and students; assisting with shifts at a general reference desk (including evening and weekend hours); and creating and maintaining subject web pages in assigned areas. This position is an active member of the reference department, involved in collaborative planning and governance. Other potential areas of support could include patent searching and the teaching of one-credit chemistry or engineering information resources courses.

Required:

·         ALA-accredited Masters Degree in library science.

·         Bachelor's Degree in one of the above subject areas and/or significant experience in industry or a library related to the above disciplines.

·         Demonstrated working knowledge of scientific resources including Chemical Abstracts, SciFinder Scholar, Beilstein/Crossfire Commander, Sadtler, etc.

·         Demonstrated knowledge of and enthusiasm for the integration of new technologies into the delivery of information services.

·         Demonstrated ability to design and create web-based materials.

·         Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team within a culturally diverse user community.

·         Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

·         Demonstrated potential for meeting university libraries faculty promotion and tenure requirements.

·         Demonstrated initiative, flexibility, and self-direction.

Desirable: previous public services work; academic or special library experience; teaching experience.

The appointment rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. The annual minimum salary is $45,000 with a comprehensive benefits package and annual vacation of 22 working days.  Library faculty appointments are twelve month, tenure-track positions. Promotion and tenure require demonstration of scholarship and other criteria. With leadership from the Dean of University Libraries, the Libraries became a member of the Association of Research Libraries in 2002.
