SALARY: $41657.00 OPEN UNTIL FILLED DESCRIPTION: The Suffolk Public Library System is looking for a creative and energetic Children’s Services Coordinator, Librarian II, to run the children’s department. The ideal candidate will have extensive knowledge of and experience in children’s and young adult literature and programming for all ages. The children’s department serves children, teens, and families for all branches. Our library system serves the growing city of Suffolk, which has a population of 80,000. We circulate approximately 250,000 items annually. The Suffolk Public Library System is composed of four service units. Under general supervision, the qualified applicant will oversee the Children’s Department and will coordinate services for children and families for the library system. Work involves assisting patrons regarding children's questions and materials, acquisitions, and children's programming. The qualified applicant will also maintain and develop the children’s and young adult collections by selecting books and materials and weeding the existing collections. The qualified applicant will have experience training and supervising staff, delegating responsibilities, and handling personnel issues as they arise and may be responsible for the branch in the absence of the branch manager. This position also develops and implements children’s programming within the library, including storytimes, library tours, and instruction, as well as serving as a liaison to school librarians and other community organizations to promote the library. Other duties include creating reading lists, bibliographies, and promotional materials as well as overseeing the creation of these items. The qualified applicant must exercise independent judgment in developing programs and completing assigned tasks. The qualified applicant must also exercise considerable tact and courtesy in frequent contact with patrons and the general public. REQUIREMENTS: Masters degree in an ALA accredited program in Library Science. Experience in public library services and some supervisory experience; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must be certified as a Librarian by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Education Library Board or have the ability to obtain certification within six months of employment. Some evening and weekend work required. Valid driver’s license required. No residency requirement. MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including office equipment such as computers, printers, computer networks, typewriter, calculators, cash registers, security systems, microfiche reader and printer, etc. Must be able to exert up to 200 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are those for Light Work. The position requires walking or standing to a significant degree. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights up to 50 pounds and push weights up to 285 pounds.
