Catalog/Metadata Librarian

The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Libraries invites applications and nominations for the position of Catalog/Metadata Librarian on the Resource Discovery Team within the Collection & Resource Management Division.  The UWM Libraries seeks an energetic, knowledgeable, and technologically capable individual, knowledgeable of traditional cataloging practices but also eager to create exemplary access to a large and growing array of electronic resources.  This position reflects the Libraries’ commitment to meet the needs of its users through innovative and creative application of technology.  The individual in the position will help guide the Team and Division as it evolves to meet new access challenges in an environment of Web-resources and services, a diversity of digital assets, and multiple metadata schema.  This position supports the UWM research and teaching mission through the creation and provision of efficient and effective resource description.

Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Team Leader, the Catalog/Metadata Librarian will work with team members to:

·         Define, create and coordinate appropriate descriptive and subject access to the Libraries’ resources, performs original and complex copy cataloging and classification;

·         Collaborate with MARC and non-MARC metadata creators on the Team and throughout the UWM Libraries to ensure uniform application of standards for resource description, and provide interpretations of developments as they evolve;

·         Assist with the application and interpretation of appropriate metadata schema to the Libraries’ resources;

• Maintain knowledge of current issues and trends in national and international resource description standards and emerging technologies, and is expected to participate and contribute to the profession;
• Participate in the documentation and implementation of local policies and procedures for resource description, and contribute to project management and planning cataloging and processing workflow;
• Participate in the training and supervision of interns, fieldworkers and student employees.

Qualifications—Required:

• Master's degree from an ALA-accredited program or comparable accredited foreign program.

Qualifications—Preferred:

·         One year of experience in an academic library

·         Experience with an integrated library system (Voyager preferred);

• Knowledge of the principles of cataloging, subject analysis, classification, and authority control and ability to apply those principles according to recognized rules and standards, including LC classification, LCSH, AACR2, and RDA.
• Demonstrated high level of written and oral communication, organizational, problem-solving and planning skills.
• Demonstrated ability to plan, coordinate, and implement projects in a technology rich environment.
• Commitment to excellence in bibliographic control and discovery of library resources.
• Commitment to excellence in services to students, faculty and staff.

• Knowledge of at least one foreign language.
• Experience with manipulating batch records in MARC or other metadata formats (e.g. MarcEdit, Perl).
• Familiarity with current and evolving metadata standards and associated technologies.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with a wide range of students, faculty and staff.
