Director of Library and Information Services
Hebron Academy is an independent coeducational boarding and day school of 260 students, including 60 students from 12 countries outside the US and Canada, located on a 1600-acre campus in the western hills of Maine. The Academy seeks an experienced educator and leader to serve as Director of Library and Information Services. The Director oversees the operation of Hupper Library. The position divides generally into two major areas of responsibility—the purchasing, organization, and upkeep of resources to support the school’s academic program, and the role of liaison to students and faculty as they use the library to support teaching and learning, particularly in the areas of research, collaboration, and interdisciplinary studies. The Director should be well-versed in and adept at using technology as a learning and research tool.
Specific Responsibilities:
Library and Media Center Resources and Facility
§ Manage the library/media center budget and purchase, catalog, and shelve new materials.
§ Communicate with vendors of online resources and subscriptions.
§ Keep current with the digital initiatives of the Maine State library system.
§ Maintain an environment conducive to learning, maintaining spaces for both individual research and collaborative projects.
§ Manage the library page on the Hebron website.
§ Work closely with the Technology Department to ensure the upkeep of hardware supporting digital resources and to consider technology enhancements.
§ Continue a dialog with the community about the changing nature of libraries and resources in order to consider how the Hupper Library might continue to grow and adapt to the school’s needs.
Learning Liaison
§ Educate students and faculty on library resources and how to find/use them.
§ Collaborate with faculty prior to and during class projects.
§ Seek input from faculty on resources to support the academic program.
§ Promote the importance of research and research skills to both students and faculty.
§ Cultivate recreational reading with both students and faculty.
§ Manage textbook lists and work closely with online textbook vendor.
The Director of Library and Information Services will also be involved in other duties relevant to the boarding school experience.
Qualifications:
§ Masters degree in Library Science or Bachelors degree with extensive relevant experience
§ Demonstrated capability for leadership, management, and problem solving
§ Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
§ Sense of humor, patience, tolerance, and most importantly, enthusiasm for adolescents
§ Familiarity with independent boarding school environment helpful
