The Head of Access Services is responsible for overseeing the policy and planning aspects of all access services for the University Libraries: Circulation and stack management, Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery, Washington Research Library Consortium Loan Service (patron-initiated borrowing), and access services for Distance Education programs. The Head of Access Services is responsible for integrating all access services into a seamless suite of services, working with other managers and department heads in the systems, technical services, and research services areas of the Libraries, to assure high-quality delivery of scholarly content and research information to all members of the university community. The Head of Access Services provides the intellectual leadership for defining an innovative access services agenda that anticipates future developments in resource sharing and content access in a distributed environment, with four libraries on three campuses, with close working relationships with the separately administered School of Law Library. In addition, the Head of Access Services works closely with counterparts in three consortia: WRLC (Washington Research Library Consortium); VIVA (Virtual Library of Virginia); and ASERL (Association of Southeastern Research Libraries).
The Head of Access Services supervises directly three staff (one librarian and two senior paraprofessional staff) and oversees a department of full-time staff (13) and student employees (6) in the Fenwick Library (main library) and assumes overall building security and collection maintenance. The Head of Access Services assumes leadership for building a team approach to access services with other Circulation and Access Services managers in the Mason library system and leads coordination of policy and planning through appointment of appropriate working groups, committees, and task forces. The Head of Access Services ensures a strong customer service orientation and prepares reports based on data from integrated systems reporting as well as from qualitative methods. The Head of Access Services reports to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Educational Services.
Required
Qualifications:
● ALA-accredited MLS, or
foreign equivalent
● Previous substantial experience in one or more areas of access services in an
academic research library: circulation, reserves, interlibrary loan/document
delivery, distance education service delivery.
● Substantial experience with a major ILS (integrated
library system)
● Supervisory and management experience at the professional level – with
demonstrated customer service orientation
● Knowledge of copyright law and its application in academic libraries
● Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
● Excellent collaborative and team skills
● Strong data analysis and interpretive skills
● Collection management and space planning experience
● Must have ability to meet requirements for reappointment and promotion under
the Librarians’ Handbook
