TIMBERLAND REGIONAL
LIBRARY
The
city of Olympia, in Thurston County, is located at the southern tip of the
Puget Sound and is the major cultural center of the region. The Timberland Regional Library
Administrative Service Center is in nearby Tumwater.
The rugged Olympic Mountains rise in the distance and Mt. Rainier seems close
enough to touch on a clear day. This
thriving community maintains its small-town feel, but if you occasionally crave
a big city atmosphere, Seattle is just 60 miles away with major league sports
teams, skyscrapers, and an international airport. The region clearly has something for
everyone!
Timberland
Regional Library (TRL) serves five counties in southwestern Washington
State. The 27 community libraries, two
cooperative library centers and three kiosks serve just under half a million
people in this nearly 7,000 square mile service area with a collection of 1.3
million items. The Library District is
governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees with five trustees appointed by
commissioners from each county and two additional members filling at-large
positions. TRL is funded by property
taxes and revenue from timber sales in the five-county library district.
Before
1968, when TRL was created as an “Intercounty Rural Library District,” library
service was simply unavailable in some of the rural areas and was provided
through bookmobiles, space in city halls, and in some original Carnegie
buildings in others. City and rural
residents of the counties are now well served through the economies of
scale. Bookmobiles have been replaced
with buildings, temporary collections are now housed in permanent facilities,
and partnerships with schools and tribes have created additional service points
through cooperative library centers and kiosks.
State of the art electronic services now provide residents with the best
available library service throughout the five county area.
BY THE NUMBERS
This
position is open until filled, application review will begin January 25, 2012.
