Primary Purpose: The Distance Services Librarian provides leadership to integrate library services into a growing program of off-site and distance education, aligning these services with the Association of College & Research Libraries Standards for Distance Learning Library Services. Manages the
interlibrary loan department and document delivery services. Develops tutorials
and other materials to support online learning. Participates as a member of the
library faculty in collection development, instruction, reference, and other activities.
Key Responsibilities:
A. Provides leadership to integrate library services into a growing program of off-site and distance education, aligning these services with the Association of College & Research Libraries Standards for Distance Learning Library Services.
B. Manages the interlibrary loan department and document delivery services.
C. Collaborates with faculty and librarians to provide support to faculty and students engaged in distance learning.
D. Develops and implements assessment program to determine effectiveness of library support to distance learning.
E. Serves as primary liaison librarian for online and distance learning, distance centers, and remote locations.
F. Develops materials in support of online learning.
G. Cooperatively maintains library webpages for distance services, interlibrary loan, and distance centers.
H. Participates in reference desk duty. Assists faculty, students, staff and other users on a one-on-one basis by answering specific information requests, offering research assistance, and guiding users in the effective use of a broad range of information resources found in the library.
I. Serves as a bibliographer to designated academic departments and oversees the selection of materials in assigned subject areas. Assists in collection development and evaluation; monitors pertinent portions of the acquisitions budget; works to develop and maintain good relations with faculty members.
J. Participates in professional activities, including university and library committees and task forces, and attends professional meetings.
K. Participates in the library's instruction program.
L. Performs other responsibilities and duties as assigned by supervisor and the University Librarian.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. Requires a MLS from an ALA-accredited program
2. Experience in an interlibrary loan department
3. Demonstrated communication and instructional skills
4. Supervision experience
5. One or more years of experience preferably in an
academic library setting
6. Experience using Microsoft Office applications
7. Experience with distance learning and affiliated
technologies
8. Experience with interlibrary loan specific
systems (i.e. OCLC, Docline, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Teaching experience
2. Experience with document delivery (to distance
patrons)
3. Knowledge and/or experience with bibliographic
databases
4. Experience in collection development
