BASIC FUNCTION: 

Under the general direction of the Branch Manager,
the Children's Outreach Specialist performs specialized tasks related to
providing library and literacy services to children up to twelve years in
age.  The Children's Outreach Specialist conducts
offsite programming to children through agencies such as schools and childcare
centers as well as children situated with in-home childcare providers. The
Children's Outreach Specialist also provides early literacy training to parents
and performs other tasks as necessary to encourage the use of the Library by
children and to keep the trust of parents in the Library as an
institution.  Determining and adhering to established budgets, tracking of detailed information, and participation in procedure/policy setting are required.  Duties require independent judgment and independent action.  The Children's Outreach Specialist interacts extensively with the public and other staff members.

RESPONSIBILITIES: 

• Plan, organize, conduct, and promote programs and
       community outreach services for children, including early literacy
       activities designed to promote school readiness.


• Coordinate
       and conduct training for staff, parents and caregivers in early literacy
       development; develop manuals and other supporting documentation.


• Establish
       and maintain relationships with other agencies and organizations providing
       early literacy services for the purpose of promoting library programs and
       encouraging community partnerships.


• Perform
       collection development/collection management activities as assigned.


• Select
       and deliver themed teacher collections to outreach sites and honor
       collections to local businesses and organizations.


• Develop
       and manage a programming budget.


• Assist
       children's staff with on-site programming and special events.


• Create monthly narrative and
       statistical reports of the position's activities.


• Coordinate
       public relations for programming with the Public Relations Manager.


• Lead and serve on committees as
       assigned by the Library Director.


• Provide
       reference and reader's advisory service to phone-in, walk-in and web-based
       reference patrons.


• Perform other duties as
       assigned.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL
REQUIREMENTS:
 

• Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education plus work experience with young
       children, such as in elementary school, Head Start, or children's
       department of a library.

  Demonstrated knowledge of children's literature
  and experience with children's programming.
• ·        
  Knowledge of social emotional development in
  children ages birth to twelve and experience working with culturally and
  economically diverse families.

library materials required.  Ability to
communicate orally and in writing effectively. 
Work extensive hours at the computer screen.   Reaching above shoulder heights, below thewaist or lifting as required to file documents or store materials throughout the work day. Abilityto do repetitive tasks with speed and accuracy.   Individuals may need to carry, push, pull, or lift up to 30 pounds.  Proper lifting techniques required.  Ability to work under pressure, coordinating
multiple responsibilities simultaneously, and meet firm deadlines.
