POSITION: Reference / Instruction Librarian

 

APPOINTMENT RANK & SALARY:

Appointment at the rank of Librarian I (entry level; minimum salary $47,000) or Librarian II (minimum 2 years experience; minimum salary $50,600). Rank and salary depend on qualifications and experience.

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

Join a dynamic, forward-looking ARL library for the opportunity to design, deliver and promote innovative, interactive library services.

 

         We are seeking a dynamic self-starter who takes initiative and is prepared to contribute in a rapidly changing learning environment.  As part of Public Services, Reference plays a key role in developing knowledge and skills to an active and engaged student body and is currently developing new initiatives in delivering services.  This position requires an innovative person willing to pursue new technologies in reference services, participate in end user assessment, and enhance existing virtual reference services. The position requires active participation and collaboration in developing a learning commons environment.  Some evening/weekend hours are required. This position will serve on library and university committees, which provides unique opportunities to promote Gelman Library System (GLS) services across diverse constituencies. The position reports to the Coordinator of Reference Services.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

        

§   Provides reference and research assistance, training end users in the use of library resources and services, including at service desks, and in research appointments, orientations and instruction

§  Maintains and enhances current virtual reference services, including IM, and Libguides, and providing training as needed to staff

§   Supports initiatives to promote reference services with current technologies; investigates,  tests and recommends technologies for the delivery of reference services and resources

§  Participates in assessment initiatives, planning and implementing usability studies on library services and resources

§  Participates in Education and Instruction Services, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses

§  Other duties as assigned.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

§  ALA accredited MLS

§  Experience providing reference service and/or relevant coursework

§   Teaching experience and/or coursework in library instruction, information literacy, or education

§  Experience using electronic resources and article databases

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES PREFERRED:

 

§  Experience providing reference service in an academic environment

§  Demonstrated commitment to public service

§  Understanding of the key issues, ideas, and trends in reference services

§  Experience with reference technologies (IM chat, Libguides) and with Web technologies,  such as RSS, podcasting, blogs and wikis, and web development applications

§   Familiarity with  user assessment tools, methods and processes

§   Experience in providing instructional support

§  Experience working in a collaborative, cross functional, team-based environment

§  Excellent oral and written communication skills
