Library seeks a Reference/Interlibrary Loan Librarian committed to
undergraduate education and the active support of faculty and students. As a Reference
Librarian, the successful candidate will guide and instruct library patrons in
identifying, retrieving and evaluating information; be a key library
instructor, able to teach students, faculty, and staff in a variety of
settings; and serve as the Library’s liaison to academic departments, with an
emphasis on humanities. As Interlibrary Loan Librarian, she or he will assume
responsibility for the Library’s lending and borrowing beyond the functions of
the Five College integrated library system; assess and implement the most
effective methods of document delivery to the Amherst College community;
supervise staff who perform interlibrary loan and document delivery functions;
monitor interlibrary activity and generate reports and statistics that help all
librarians to improve collections and service.
Qualifications: Master’s Degree from an ALA-accredited program; strong academic
background in humanities; professional experience in an academic library, which
includes experience with interlibrary cooperation and reference and/or
instruction strongly preferred. Must be fluent with current emerging
information technology, especially with systems that facilitate interlibrary
loans, document delivery, communication with library patrons, and statistical
analysis of services. Demonstrated ability to teach required. Candidate should
possess good analytical skills and an ability to use information generated by
interlibrary and document delivery services to assess and enhance public
services and collection building. Strong interpersonal and communication skills
required. Supervisory experience, collection development expertise, and a
working knowledge of at least one foreign language strongly preferred. The
successful candidate will be expected to contribute to Library initiatives that
