GENERAL SUMMARY:
Responsible for the digitization, metadata creation, and organization of materials in the library collection along with original and complex copy cataloging of materials in various formats under the supervision of the Librarian & Curator with occasional deputizing for Librarian & Curator.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Participates in the development of digital collections to serve users both inside and outside The American Legion National Headquarters.
2. Performs metadata creation and management for born-digital and retrospectively digitized local content.
3. Prepares born-digital and retrospectively digitized assets for inclusion into content management systems through metadata creation, OCR processing, and maintenance of controlled vocabulary and quality standards.
4. Oversees data preparation and ingest.
5. Catalogs and prepares books, pamphlets, and other items for shelving or storage, using CSTextWorks software.
6. Performs literature search of books, magazines, pamphlets, correspondence, resolutions Proceedings of the National Executive Committee and National Convention, department and post publications and histories to answer requests for information.
7. Provides information and consultation to external constituencies and/or the general public on matters pertaining to the collection; may participate in professional meetings
8. Maintains knowledge of new techniques, technologies, and innovations and maintains liaisons with relational professionals in the field.
9. Participates in divisional meetings and serves on working committees; collaborates with other staff members in long range planning.
10. Assists when necessary the Librarian in editing the printed digests of the Annual Report to Congress, National Convention, and the National Executive Committee meetings, attending these meetings when required.
11. Responsible for oversight of some interns hired for special projects and for project completion.
12. Can deputize for the Librarian and Curator in his absence, answering library and museum related questions and attending appropriate meetings, among other duties.
13. Cross-trained to serve as back-up for Librarian & Curator
14. Other duties as may be required.
MINIMUM SKILLS REQUIRED FOR ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Education/Technical Knowledge
College education, plus one or two years of additional study in a particular field of specialization as may be represented by a master's degree or a required five-year bachelor's degree. MLS, MIS, or MLIS degree preferred
Additional Skills Needed
Cataloging standards, such as AACR2, LCSH or other controlled vocabularies
Digitization standards, techniques, and software; character recognition (OCR) processing
Computer skills needed include: MS Office to include Outlook and Word; databases such as Inmagic; and DSpace or other content management systems
Attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy
