I may be moving to the Bay Area (living in Berkeley, Albany or Oakland) because of my husband's job. I am just finishing my MLS degree and will hopefully eventually find work as a children's or YA librarian in a public library - but I'm pretty open to available jobs. Does anyone have any advice or information for me?
Thanks!

I've been keeping an eye on the CA Lib Assoc job board (http://rsmart.ca/CLA_Members/search.asp?jobopt=js) for a while, and I really don't remember seeing too many youth service jobs in the Bay Area. That's not my field, so maybe I'm just overlooking them, but there do not seem to be any posted now (though I didn't check every one that just has a title of "Librarian"). There seem to be a lot more library jobs in general in southern CA, which is somewhat disappointing. Given that there is a library school at San Jose State, it might be tough to break into the local job market. I don't mean to be discouraging -- volunteering at a library could certainly help.

I was born/raised in the Bay Area. My advice: try to find something on the opposite of the bay - the areas you mentioned you'd be living in, such as Oakland/Alameda Co., or even Contra Costa Co. Although the city/county of SF has a generous pay scale it has very few openings and you'll likely be on a list for months, if not years. I was ranked 4 on an eligible list and have been on that list for about a year and a half now.

Solano County-close to Oakland, etc. is hiring a ya librarian. At the moment the position is 1/2 time but they will be opening a new library in July/August? Then the position will be full-time. Contact Bonnie Katz @ the Solano County library headquarters in Fairfield, CA.

Some of the public libraries do the list thing and then send you notices of openings. At least SFPL does. You have to apply, and then you'll be ranked on the list and get openings sent to you. I notice children's and YA openings fairly often, although more and more of them are part-time. I think Oakland may do the same thing.
