Hi, I've been considering becoming a librarian for awhile now. Can anyone give me an idea on the best BS/BA degree to get? From what I'm reading online, it is pretty wide open. I'm currently in the Air Force, so I'm looking for a degree I can get either online or at night. Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

There is not an undergraduate degree that is more desirable for those going on to get a masters in library science. The most an undergraduate degree can do is offer you unique skills or knowledge that prepares you for one type of librarian over another type.

I would strongly suggest you get an undergraduate degree in something that you enjoy. If you are planning to use it as the foundation for your MLS, you should spend your time and energy learning what about what interests you. You can always shift your focus when you get the MLS--it is not an either-or kind of degree, but an additive degree. So, for example, if you get an undergraduate degree in music, you can focus on either music librarianship or academic librarianship--or a BA in history could be a great background for working with maps.

I agree with the others, however, having an undergrad degree that is someone unusual for people who are in the library field could be helpful. For example, a foreign language degree in any of the middle eastern languages or Asian languages or any of the sciences.
