I have been reading another forum that deals with people looking for jobs in academia and I ran across a post stating that in academia it is frowned up to send thank you letters. Most of these people are looking at teaching positions. I have been looking for a job in an academic library and always send thank you letters (emails). What is your take on this? It seems rude to not send a thank you letter.
Also, when you do an on-campus interview with many people not just the search committee, who do you send thank you letters to?

I just finished up chairing a search committee in January for a search that reached almost a full year from writing the details to the start date of the new person. It was never frowned upon if we received or did not receive a thank you. The candidates we received them from it did give us a sense how interested they were in us, but we did not use it as a deciding factor.

Thanks Brian. I don't think I will change my ways and will continue to write thank you letters.

I have never heard this in librarianship! Perhaps we're the kind of folks who still appreciate thank yous?
For my last two on-campus interviews, I send thank you notes to members of the search committee plus anyone else I felt I had a good conversation with or connected with. They were short, handwritten notes.
I was offered both positions, so it seems at least it didn't hurt!

Also, when I served on two search committees, I know I appreciated the notes I received.
