Science Librarian 3, Reference/Collection Management-KSL, (Job No. 7638), posted 11/30/07, minimum annual salary is $49,500
The incumbent reports functionally to the Head of Reference within the larger Department of Public Services. The Science Librarian serves as liaison to the departments of Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Geological Sciences, Communication Sciences, and provides specialized research/reference/collection support to these departments. This Librarian will establish and maintain close communications between these departments, develop outreach and instructional programs and serve as the primary expert in the above disciplines. Information literacy is a major focus of library service. In this role the incumbent develops and delivers curriculum integrated instruction and creates print and electronic guides and tools covering resources within assigned subject areas as well as supporting general library instruction and creating departmental web pages, and sharing in overall Library and Reference and Research Services projects, programs, and committees. The incumbent is responsible for providing general reference services, including participation in the evening and weekend rotation at the reference desk and in chat and other reference services initiatives. The Associate Director for Collections guides the collection development and management responsibilities of the position including collection analysis, use studies, development of innovative collection techniques, and building collections in all formats in partnership with faculty in assigned subject areas. The incumbent manages all budget allocations for assigned subject areas in consultation with faculty, the Associate Director for Collections and the Collection Management & Planning Coordinator. To support the overall mission of the Kelvin Smith Library, the incumbent will contribute to the preparation of grant proposals and library-wide projects. Reporting to the University Librarian, this position is responsible for providing dynamic leadership in collection assessment. This person works collaboratively with the Associate Director, Collection Management & Planning Coordinator, collection management librarians, library staff, faculty, consortial partners, vendors and other organizations providing leadership in evaluating library collections using an array of assessment tools to determine the effectiveness of collections while identifying new access, formats, and content needs and priorities. REQUIREMENTS: Experience -- Minimum six years of relevant library experience. Level III performs the most complex work of the job and performs a full scope of work of the job. Level III Librarian is the resource or technical library expert or performs a specific high-level professional function or a wide variety of types of work or responsibilities of the job. May be assigned specific responsibilities in areas of library services. Placement at this level requires the librarian to have consistently demonstrated a comprehensive level of professional knowledge, skills, abilities and other competencies to regularly perform a full scope of work responsibilities of the position or assignment at a fully proficient level, experience in providing library public services in an academic context, knowledge of collection management in an academic library setting (e.g. approval plans, selecting appropriate library materials). Education/Licensing -- ALA-accredited Masters of Library Science degree is required, advanced degree in a related subject area or significant relevant job experience beyond the six year minimum is required. Essential skills -- Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks, ability to plan and organize work and solve problems, ability to work with all levels of users and staff, ability to exercise independent judgment and skill in managing several diverse projects simultaneously, demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented, collaborated environment, demonstrated organizational skills, excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work with the public in a tactful manner in a multicultural environment, excellent ability to communicate in writing and speaking, experience in a range of methods for library instruction with evidence of significant participation in instructional programs and successful teaching experience, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, willingness, motivation and initiative in developing new and unique service programs. Technical skills -- Good technical knowledge of Windows and/or Macintosh operating environments, good knowledge of software packages required (e.g. Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word), ability to use technology to perform related planning and administrative tasks, expertise with library systems and services such as online public access catalogs and online indexes and databases, working knowledge of instructional and/or presentation software.
