Is it possible to get a school librarian job in Texas while being concurrently enrolled in a school lib program? I have an MLIS and several years teaching experience but no learning resource specialist endorsement--I went for webhead courses instead.

When I asked my school (UNT) they said I'd have to take 24 more hours and a practicum to get the endorsement. Do Texas schools do alternative or emergency certification for librarians the way they do for teachers? I've written to the SBEC and my local ESC region but I'd thought I'd ask here as well.

Thanks.

I worked as a school librarian for FWISD after only taking 2 classes towards my MLS. This was the 1998-99 school year though, so things may have changed since then, but at that time you could get a school library job while you were in school and it would count as your practicum.

I went to TWU not UNT, so that could be part of the difference in information that you're getting also. I would contact the head of library media at the ISD where you're wanting to apply and ask them. I would bet that FWISD and DISD will have no problem with it, while the suburban districts probably won't let you.

good luck!

Hi,

Thanks for answering. I know in 2002 Texas changed the school librarian requirements from being able to pass the Excet (sp?) to actually having an MLS. The library services person from the district advised me to contact UNT, while the ESC person I spoke with told me that schools aren't required to have a certified school librarian and that sometimes paraprofessionals do it. She also said it was up to the district to do an emergency plan but that I'd have to have already taken some credit hours.
This is a suburban district with a decent reputation so I'm sure they'll want someone certified. I'm kicking myself for not going this route in school but I didn't want to limit my options. Oh well!

I went through Alternative Certification training recently to receive librarian certification in Texas. If you still need information, I'll be glad to share what I know.
