I'm not sure how to handle 3 short term jobs I've had since I left a job voluntarily about a year ago. I left the old one b/c a)my manager and I didn't work well and, b)I found I didn't care for management. I was fired after four months from the next job b/c my skills weren't a good match, their words, but true and no surprise. It's now been six months and I've worked as a temp in two libraries.

Do I add these shorter positions to keep gaps out or simply mention them in my cover letter? How do I explain being fired? I have explained, truthfully, that owing to the amount of money that was made available for the position, the position that was created, described and advertised was not the work they needed done, hence the bad fit. I'm wondering if this wasn't a mistake, sounding more like an excuse and too complicated to boot. Explaining firing is hard!

Suggestions?

Your cover letter should address the needs of the hiring organization, not your temporary placements. Put the jobs in your resume. Listing temporary jobs is better than have a long term gap.

You may not need to address being fired as it may never come up. People know temporary jobs when they see them. If they do ask about the positions, be honest without degrading your past supervisors.

I would not address the short term jobs/firing in the cover letter. You should directly address how your skills match the position you are applying for in the cover letter. Save any explaining about short term jobs for the interview.

I think everyone is saying the same thing here, and I agree. List the short term jobs, and focus on the job you are applying for. Most people are not going to be concerned about 1 year of short term jobs---3 years of those might be a problem. You need to show that you are the best person for the new job.
