I have a tentative job offer out of state with a city library but they want to conduct a medical examination which I must "successfully pass"(there was a note of this on the application but I didn't think much of it). How normal is this? What can I expect?

I've never encountered it, and it seems weird to me. My guess is that it will involve a drug test. I don't think it would be legal for them to disqualify you from the position because you have (for example) a heart condition or something similar. If being able to lift 40 pounds is a requirement of the job (as it so often is for some reason), maybe they'll test that too?

I always find medical tests associated with jobs to be a bit invasive and suspicious, but I know that many cities require them. And, if the job is good enough, I sure can't see turning it down just because of that!

Maybe someone who has gone through it can be of more help to you...

Also congrats - I have experienced three different kinds of medical examinations prior to actual employment and they ranged from a drug test to a full-blown physical with eye and ear - the last was for a union job. Call up to their HR department / person and see if you can get more details. With the rising cost of insurance, this will probably be a more common experience to head off payments for pre-existing conditions. good luck

Thanks for responding. So does this mean if I have pre-existing conditions they won't hire me--or if they do, the insurance won't pay for it? My main concern is I'm on anti-depressants--have been for years, they aren't optional--and I'm worried they won't hire me if they find out. I also have a bad back. Will they be able to obtain previous medical records and use them to deny me a job, whether legally or illegally?

I would certainly hope not. I'm no lawyer, but that seems really unfair to me, unless there is a specific duty required of the job that you could not perform. For example, it would be pretty reasonable not to hire a blind person to be the bookmobile driver.

I think in this case, you have to have the physical. It's a condition of employment. What they consider passing, only they can tell you.

Call and ask them for details. Say you want to know what to expect so that you can be prepared with necessary information and/or records.

All we can do on this forum is guess, and that won't really give you an answer for your situation.

Many city systems, especially larger ones, will require pre-employment physicals (as will any job w/ the city) and drug tests. It shouldn't affect your employment offer unless the physical shows you can't carry out the duties of the job.

Was there physical requirements listed in the job ad?

I had to have a physical after I was hired but before I moved overseas for my current position in Egypt (it's only the only job for which I was asked, post-employment, to complete a form that included listing my religion). It did seem strange, but I understood it as part of the deal of moving overseas. Which is not your situation... but, there you go.
