I almost put this in the "at least one year" thread since it is a similiar situation but I need some advice. Let me briefly recap my situation. I am an MLS grad with 9 years of public library experience, 5 of those as a Reference Librarian. After working almost 5 years at one branch, I chose to take a job in another library system. I had gone as far professionally as I thought I could, plus I had a boss from hell. I started this new position two months ago.

Unfortunately, it turns out that this job is even worse than my last one! When I was hired I knew that the branch manager was fairly new and that the former branch manager had moved to another position. I was told in the interview that the librarian I would be replacing had decided to go part time. Once I was hired, I found out more of the story. It seems that the former branch manager was "reassigned" and that the librarian I replaced was actually demoted to part time. Had I know all this going in, I would never have taken this job, and I am miserable.

Here's where I need advice-I am desperate to get out of this position but should I even bother to look for a job when I've only been at this one two months? I've applied for a few jobs and even had three interviews but I'm at a loss as to how to explain my desire to leave a job so soon.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Think

You are in a difficult position, for sure. I am one that does not necessarily believe that you should stay at least a year in a position, especially if you are extremely unhappy. Keep in mind, however, that it might take you a year or more to find a position that you really like. I’m sure you’ve learned some valuable lessons that you will apply as you interview for that next job – make sure that you interview (or talk to) the people you are going to work with, and ask relevant questions about the workplace and how happy they are in their positions. Interview your potential supervisors and ask them about management style, about past management and upcoming changes (if any).

If you are getting interviews already, that means you’re doing something right (on paper, anyway). As for discussing why you want to leave a job so soon after starting, be as honest as possible without talking bad about any particular person.

The Library Career People answered a very similar question (with somewhat differing views) a few years ago (see 2nd question on the page): [http://www.lisjobs.com/newsletter/careerpeople/may04careerpeople.htm]

Good luck!
