Most of my experience has been in reference services and the only technical services and cataloging experience that I have is from learning it in the MLS program. FYI--I've worked with OCLC and WorldCat in a reference librarian capacity. Since I am very interested in this type of work, I was wondering how to make the shift while looking for a new job. Can anyone point me in the right direction for professional development and/or job related resources for this type of library work. I've been out of school for about 3 years now and would consider finding an entry level position since i have little experience in technical services. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Are you looking to work in a public or academic library? And also, what section exactly? Cataloging? Acquisitions?

SaraD,

I would like to make the technical services transition into an academic library if possible.

A few suggestions:

* Be upfront in your cover letter about your desire to transition into Tech Svcs, but also specify WHY you want to make that move -- it's a relatively unusual transition, and I know that if I saw that in a search, I'd be curious. Your reasons, if well articulated, might be my deciding factor in your favor for an entry-level position.
* Take some cataloging classes or workshops. I don't know where in NY you are, but NYLINK offers good classes throughout the year across the state. You'll learn interesting things, and you'll also be able to show through your CV that you're proactively building your skill set in technical services tasks.
