Hello,

What is the difference between a MLS (Master of Library Science) and a MLIS (Master of Library and Information Science) degree? Or are they equivalent?

I've noticed some job ads ask specifically for an MLS degree, others for a MLIS degree and others indicating either is acceptable. I am wondering if the two former types of ads are intentionally exclusive?

Thanks.

No, they are basically equivalent. Some schools call it MLS and others call it MLIS, but so long as it's an ALA-accredited library school, it's basically all the same. Those schools that call it MLIS often have more of a technology-oriented perspective on the degree, but that depends highly on your particular interests and the courses you choose to take.
