Interested in learning about the job market for law and news librarians in the greater Los Angeles area. I know newspapers aren't doing great right now, but any info from people in the field and the area would be great. Are any additional master's useful in news librarianship (history, journalism, law)? I'm also interested in knowing what types of law libraries and positions in law libraries are most abundant in Los Angeles. I do know for most positions in law school libraries a J.D. is needed. Any tips on breaking into law librarianship?

Thank you much!

The job market for law library or news media library positions is not great. As a non-degree technician and laid off from a law library in 2007, it has been an incrediably difficult situation. I also have a journalism background. Many law libraries (nationwide) face reduced budgets and are restructuring. Part of the problem is technology greatly reduces the need for print material collections. For example, on-line legal research via Lexis or Westlaw enable lawyers to find and print information without books. Many law firms have discontinued or eliminated their libraries and reduced library staff. As for newspapers, there are similar trends with electronic resources such as databases and the internet. Many publications will be electronic only. There are still library support jobs and need for librarians but advanced technology and database skills will increase marketability.

I don't know your background but I think a support position is a good start. I suggest a course in legal research. As for newspapers, a Journalism background is essential. Good luck!

jnewman - Thanks for your response; I appreciate it! I'm planning on beginning an LIS master's program in the fall. I just wanted to get an idea about the job market for some fields I'm interested in now. I hope your situation improves soon!
