I think I've been working and living in a strange and weird locale, if not undesirable: Las Vegas. At least it has become undesirable to me. I've been here two and a half years. It took a year and a half to find a one year job. So I'm going as close to my desirable location as I think I can get work, but in what I think others may consider undesirable: Cheyenne, Wyoming. But I actually like it there.
Is there a way that you could compromise? Can you fudge a move? I've been really curious about what makes a place undesirable. It has to be kind of broad, like weather, rural, city, etc, right?

What a great question! For me, undesirable could easily be about cost of living. So, I can think of plenty of amazing places I probably wouldn't actually consider (San Francisco, NYC, etc) because they're too expensive for my family and me. Also, local politics are important--I don't want to live someplace where my beliefs are completely out-of-sync with the surrounding community.
If we're getting particular: I like green, rainy places over the desert (confirmed dramatically during my recent move to Egypt).
But so much of this is about the particular school and job--that mixes up the equation dramatically.
As for your example cities: I think I'd chose the northern Rockies over Las Vegas as well.

This is so funny. As soon as I read the topic of this thread, my first thought was, "Undesirable.... like Las Vegas?"
I moved to Las Vegas for a job in a private school library last May. I thought I'd hate it here (I'm originally from Ohio... from an area that's all green and all farmland) but I actually seriously like it here. Everyone I meet is super friendly, I love my job, I LOVE being surrounded by mountains and have taken up hiking every evening. It's just fabulous. Now with all the houses going down in value so much I'll actually be able to buy a house here soon. I think it's amazing. When I took this job, I thought that worst comes to worst I could just work here a couple years and then move on, but now I'm planning on staying quite awhile.

For me, "undesirable location" = Smalltown USA, anywhere. I want to live somewhere that offers cultural resources - music, museums, art, dance, architecture. I want to live somewhere where I am not condemned to eat in a national chain restaurant every time I go out. I want to be close enough to go to some beautiful outdoors place on the weekend. I want to live close enough to a major airport that I can get where I want to go without changing airplanes 3 times.
What constitutes being undesirable will vary by person.
