I interviewed for an academic library position a couple of weeks ago. At the end of the interview, the head of the search committee told me that they would notify me about their hiring decision by a certain date. Unfortunately, I did not hear anything from the search committee on that date. After a week, I called the head of the search committee and left a voicemail message asking if they were still working on their hiring decision, or if they had already filled the position. Another week has passed and I still haven't heard anything back--no email, no phone call, no rejection letter.
Would it be appropriate to follow up one more time with an email? Or should I just assume that I didn't get the position and drop it?
I'm also wondering if this is standard practice? I know lots of libraries do not send rejection letters to their entire applicant pool, but is it common to totally ignore someone after an interview?

I think I might contact the HR department. The head of the search may be on vacation, or in the hospital, or any other number of things. All you have to ask is whether the position has been filled. They probably won't tell you anything more than that, anyway. THey may be waiting for some one to respond to an offer, and don't want to say anything to others until that is settled.

I agree with Hollis, they may have had some issues arise that might have prevented them from responding in the time frame they originally indicated.
