I've worked in public libraries for 12 years...8 as a paraprofessional. In library school, I was required to do an internship, and I chose an academic library. I hoped to make a change into academic after getting my MLS, but I was never asked to interview at any academic library that I applied to.

I did land public library jobs as a Branch Manager and Reference Manager. I also had many public library interviews over the years. Recently, I applied for a position at an academic library in the Scholarly Communication Dept. This position matches the internship I did 5 years ago. I was invited for a 20 minute phone interview this week. This offer made me happy. I take it as a sign that I presented myself well on paper. I have worked at keeping myself diversified in the library world. For example, I have collaborated with academic librarians to create a computer skills class for the public, and this project was a highlight (I think) in my resume. The interview went very quickly-- 5 questions-- and I think I did well.

Here's what I am wondering...do you think that the Search Committee performed 20 minute phone interviews with all candidates that they are interested in? I live 800 miles away from this particular job, but I suspect that the phone interview was not only because I am far away.

Also, if I am lucky enough to get offered a second interview, is it likely that I will need to present something? I am so accustomed to the public library scene. Any hints on what may lay ahead?

Many thanks,

I recently completed my own job hunt for an academic position. All of the jobs that I had interviews with first had a phone interview, followed by an in person interview if I was chosen to move forward. As far as I know, they did the phone interview, followed by in person interviews for all of the candidates, though I was out of state for all of them.

I went on three in person interview and all of them required a presentation related to the job, all of which were reference and instruction. The general pattern for the in person interviews was flying into the town the day before with someone from the organization meeting me at the airport. The next day was all interviews, meetings with various library people, and the presentation. Usually I went home the next day, but for one, I left that night because it was a Friday. The day of interviews was exhausting, and if you end up doing it, make sure to wear comfortable shoes, because you'll probably be walking a lot, and possibly be given a tour of the library.

That's the extent of my experience, but I hope it helps. Good luck!
