Does anyone have any tips on finding an entry level position as a business research analyst or information broker? I have quite a bit of work experience that I think would translate, i.e. clarifying and fully defining the needs of users, researching and presenting information for design solutions to technical and non-technical users, management, and internal team members, as well as managing and maintaining digital repositories of project relevant information. I have my MSLIS, which I received in December, 2006, with course work that included Information Services and Digital Libraries. I have no library work experience. I was hoping the combination of experience and education would qualify me for an entry level job. I'm finding very few postings for these types of positions, however. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend checking out the job boards at the Special Libraries Association (open to members only) at www.sla.org/careers. Also, you would definently want to check out the job board at the Society of Competitive Intelligence Professionals (www.scip.org) which are free. Competitive intelligence is a type of business research that also involves analysis work as well.

Information brokers are generally self-employed so it would require a lot of effort similar to starting a business. You would need to do a lot of networking and speaking in order to get research work. I would recommend checking out the Association of Independent Information Professionals (AIIP) at www.aiip.org.

Hope this helps!

Your response was a big help. It confirmed what I thought about the information broker (I have Sue Rugge's book.). I wasn't sure if things might have changed since she wrote that. I'm definitely not ready for my own business since I don't currently have a network or experience.

I was not familiar with SCIP and it looks like a great resource. Already I found an entry level job that I'm going to follow-up on. I'm an SLA member and I get email updates when new jobs are posted so I have that resource covered.

Thank you so much for directing me to SCIP and your confirmation on AIIP and SLA. I love the research aspect of my job, as well as the research I did for the MSLIS. As soon as one of my professors mentioned Sue Rugge and her work as an information broker, I was hooked. Now I just have to figure out how to get there.

Thanks again.
