This week I flew to an out-of-state public library at my own expense (I had airline miles and relatives in the area) for a 2nd interview. On the phone I was told I had a "conditional job offer".

I got a physical, fingerprints and an ID photo taken on the same day. The interview seemed to go well, until... I was told that the city budget for the year isn't complete yet and they may not be able to guarantee the job I'm interviewing for...they may not even know the status of the budget until August or (worst case scenario) possibly September.

They said they felt obligated to tell me this so if I got hired and moved there, this wouldn't be a surprise. They said they'd be in touch, that they were making their "final selections", and that hopefully they'd know about the budget within the month. Then tonight I saw an ad for the same position with an application deadline of September 12. What is the deal? Eh?

It could many many things, so I would not really read anything into it.

It could mean...
1. They liked none of the candidates.
2. It is really a 2nd similar position.
3. They have policy to keep running ads until the position is actually accepted by someone. There are often policies like this in place with artificial deadlines.
4. They may be afraid with the budget situation everyone will walk away from the position or not be available by the time it is filled.

Are you certain the advertisement is for the same position? As Brian mentioned, it could be for a similar position. What in the ad leads you to believe it is the exact/same position?

I think I would call on the phone and ask about this. That is the only way you will get accuate information. And, if they made the effort to pay for the physical, security check, etc., it seems odd that they would re-open the postition.
However, this kind of thing does happen. You have a right to know your status, given the circumstances you describe---maybe it is a separate job in a different branch. (I think I would keep looking, though, until you have the offer on paper).

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know that it is the exact same position; just that the job title and ad were very similar to the one I answered. And I'm definitely going to keep looking! :0)
