I was simply wondering if there is anyone out there reading this that could provide some info on library jobs and opportunities in Colorado - and more specifically, if you didn't live there at the time, were you able to get a job while residing out of state/far away (on the east coast).

Also, if I moved to CO without a job (husband has a job - work from home - so he can go anywhere and we would have an income), is it reasonable to think I could then get something within 2-3 months... even if it is part time or not directly related to libraries (i.e. how is Colorado/"front range" job market)? I am completely willing to work in smaller towns and somewhat out of the way places - job doesn't have to be a at big or well known library system or university. I am not too picky but 1) I am a new grad w/o much experience except 3 years paraprofessional, and 2) I do not have much experience in public libraries. I am looking at special libraries and/or technical services (i.e. "behind the scenes").

Any other info or comments would be appreciated. thanks!!

I just left Colorado last year. I got my MLS at the University of Denver. That's the first thing that makes it tough, at least on the Front Range. Competition is pretty fierce. It's such a great place to live, people are reluctant to leave. Myself, I'm regretting leaving. I had a position at a public library that was called "assistant librarian", which was NOT a professional position. You could probably get a non-professional position in a little longer than you want. A professional position is really tough. The Western Slope might be better. Here's a link to the state library jobline: http://www.libraryjobline.org/index.php The MPLA is a good resource, too.

A friend and fellow grad had 7 years para experience and has had a difficult time getting a professional job. She's a very good librarian and active in CAL, etc. I sometimes (and I've seen this discussed on NewLib list) there is a roadblock for people with this combination to get a professional job. I don't get it; but I've seen it here in Nevada as well.

The SLA there is very active. Good luck and keep in touch, I'd like to see how it goes for you. Feel free to email me off list dbriel@du.edu

Thanks for the info!!

I was thinking those very things, unfortunately, and it is good to have some anecdotal evidence... But interestingly, I just noticed a position listed on the UT job page of Librarian II - Computer Systems Administrator at Longmont Public Library, that has had its "search extended". Whenever I see those words, or "reopened", I always wonder why they can't get someone to fill it?! :-)It doesn't seem overly technical beyond the scope of an experienced librarian or even a new tech savvy graduate.

Well anyway, I appreciate your thorough response. I think I may really still consider moving out there anyway because I don't necessarily need/want to work in a traditional library in a traditional professional job. For example, I thought it might be a good idea to take a Cont. Ed. course in medical terminology and so I am taking that this summer (especially since I could not get into the elective for Health Libraries) and hope to perhaps work in a hospital/medical department dealing with health information management or medical records, or of course, a medical library. We'll see.
