Excellent Adventure

One reason I’ve posted fewer Deep Professional Thoughts lately is that I’ve been a bit distracted by a new adventure. In December, we started the process of adopting our second child, from South Korea — and an excellent adventure it’s been so far. (Today, for example, I got to stand in line at the scary school bus depot for 45 minutes to get fingerprinted — for the second time, for the second separate background check. You think libraries have rules and forms…)

I have been dithering about posting this here, leaving it alone, or starting a separate adoption blog to chronicle the process. After some thought, though, plus a total inability to remember which of my libraryland colleagues know about our adventure and which don’t, I figured a random announcement was the best way to go.

We’re just at the beginning stages of a lengthy process, but I’ll probably post random updates as we go along. Be forewarned, you may also see cute baby pictures show up here sometime in the future…

Congrats! Keep posting about it! I know I will enjoy reading about and seeing pictures of your new family member.

On BIG advantage of blogging over work is that you are not expected to pretend the rest of your life doesn’t exist..nor that the boundaries between both don’t slosh together.

I think this blog is a place to share about your joy – as much as you want. I’d enjoy updates. Congratulations!

adopted from China and from somewhere in Africa – both really good experiences.

Congrats (assuming all the paperwork, money, etc, etc, etc comes together)!

  4. Meredith:

How incredibly wonderful and exciting! As someone who has thought of that route for the future, I’d love to hear all about your experiences — no matter where you post it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with posting it here; if people don’t like it, it’s easy to skip over the adoption-related posts. But interested people could also visit a separate blog.

I wish you the best of luck in making it through the copious red tape. I’m so happy for you!

  5. Rachel:

Thanks, all! David — I want to hear all about your experiences!

After all this discussion of “me too” posts and comments: Me too. That is, I agree with Kathryn and Lori and Meredith: Congrats, exciting, it makes sense as part of your blog, and I’d love to read about the process. And it’s easy to skip over posts that someone’s not interested in.

Congratulations on the exciting news. Our little guy is adopted from Russia and we have been considering going back (read about it here: http://librarygarden.blogspot.com/2006/07/power-of-online-community.html)

Please keep posting updates. I for one will be very interested. The paper chasing stage is so hard, I don’t think people can understand until they have experienced it. Our Russian dossier ended up being 67 pages and it needed to be done in triplicate with not just notaries but also with an apostille on all of it. Quite the process indeed!

Janie – Thanks so much for sharing this! (Somehow blogger didn’t notify me of your comment, so I just now saw this.) I too am touched by the community I’m finding on- and offline while going through our own adoption process, and I’m very glad that you posted your story.
