Anyone? Anyone?

I was watching What not to Wear last night, and the person they were making over turned out to be the personal assistant to one Dr. Lois Frankel, “a noted author and speaker.” So, I looked up Dr. Frankel online and found her current speaking fee schedule, which makes something of an interesting counterpoint to the most recent discussion on speaker compensation (or lack thereof) in libraryland and how we encourage people to participate.

Now, if only I could just get a couple of you to pony up Frankel-ish fees to bring me to your event. Anyone? Anyone?

re: Dr. Frankle’s speaking fees: Holy $hi$!!!!
I know I don’t have a Ph.D., but as a professional w/ nearly 2 decades of expertise in my field, it’s still insulting to see that she could match my highest annual salary with a few talks per year.

I dropped out of a PhD program, so maybe I could just charge half of her rates! ;)

I would seriously be happy to just about 20% of what she gets… heck, maybe even 10%. I must say that the routine of speaking for “the honor” or “to give back to the profession” is wearing me a little thin these days.

Now, now, ladies. Don’t you know that “Nice Girls Don’t Get Rich?” I must admit that when my manager first explained that to be credible I had to charge the same as the competition, I too was stunned at the fees I could command with two internationally bestselling books and strong platform skills. But it’s taught me that most women undervalue what they’re worth and financially independence comes only when you get outside of your comfort zone. I hope while you were at my website you also checked out the free resources I offer and the pro bono work I do in the community. May you live a rich life in ALL ways!
