I'm swimming with ideas on this now! We are so far behind the marketing ball, I am turning red at the moment. I am thinking now of proposing a welcome letter campaign w/ a very brief list of services/links at the online library to send to newly accepted distance learning students and personalized by their area of study, if at all possible. Thanks so much for this insightful post!

Great post! I recently went to Best Buy with my dad and we purchased a small digital camera and it amazes me that what's online and listed as in stock does not always pan out in person :) I think that the "welcome packets" are a great idea and definitely shows that the library is very committed to their community of users. I also remember going into a Starbucks that let me sample a coffee before I purchased it and served it with a small pastry for free :)

I agree, great post--I'll be sharing it with my colleagues! Sounds like your local library is on the ball. Many libraries around here do "welcome to the neighborhood" packets, but I don't know if we do anything for businesses. And Starbucks... so addicting. They told me last week that if I register my gift card online (and keep adding money to it) they take off 30 cents per drink. That definitely made me want to come back.

Meredith -- Right, like I need more entertainment to claim my time! :) Although I'll say that the DVR + Netflix has completely changed my media consumption experience. Have been to maybe 2 movies in the theater in the last five years... and, we ran out of DVR and watched a "live" show the other night and it drove me insane not being able to fast forward through the commercials.

Great post! Many of those experiences are familiar to me and I agree that what seem like "little things" can end up permanently ruining the customer relationship over time. Conversely, when someone goes above and beyond what you expect, they gain your trust and loyalty, which you'd think would be the goal of any company (or library).

I'm also on the Roku waiting list. They said since we'd ordered it pretty early (and 2nd day shipping) it would be coming this week. I can't wait! Between that and Amazon Unbox through the TiVo I'll never get anything done. :)
